Lake Placid Village
In 2021,The Village of Lake Placid embarked upon a $10 million revitalization project to repave and restructure its iconic downtown Main Street – the epicenter of the 1980 Winter Olympics. The project scope went beyond surface-level improvements, including replacing the aging water and sewer infrastructure and reimagining what a stroll through the village would entail – from the north end of Main Street, south to the Herb Brooks Arena, site of the legendary “Miracle On Ice” hockey game.
Blue Spruce Landscape & Design was chosen to lead significant hardscape improvements as part of the transformation—crucial for showcasing the beauty of Mirror Lake and preparing the town to welcome visitors to the 31st International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games in the Winter of 2023.
This was one of the final capital improvements ahead of the FISU Games, which included reshaping the downtown streetscape and renewing the legacy of its storied Olympic history.
Key Project Highlights:
Our work began with base preparation to ensure all elements were correctly elevated and aligned with the broader infrastructure improvements. ADA compliance was a key focus throughout the project, ensuring all sidewalks and paths were accessible to all visitors. Blue Spruce was also responsible for installing new granite sidewalks along Mirror Lake Drive, opposite the Lake House Hotel, using textured blocks to match the aesthetic of the rest of Main Street.
New walking paths were laid in the park using the same granite blocks, creating stylistic continuity throughout the area. One of the most impressive elements of the work was the installation of a new staircase leading to the lakefront of Mirror Lake at Main Street’s north end. Even though each step of the staircase weighed nearly 900 pounds, Blue Spruce’s team was able to complete the full staircase in a single day – a testament to our precision and expertise, and a preview of what was to come for the rest of the project.
In addition to these hardscape improvements, Blue Spruce also designed and installed an irrigation system for the new plantings, ensuring the long-term health and vibrancy of the landscape. Throughout the project, our team paid great attention to detail, ensuring that all design aspects were executed to the highest standard.
Blue Spruce Landscape & Design was pivotal in transforming Lake Placid’s Main Street and honoring the town’s rich Olympic heritage while creating a vibrant future. We are proud to have contributed to a project that balances historic preservation with modern updates, and we look forward to future collaborations with those who value quality and attention to detail in commercial landscaping projects.
